Dad reports:
Tommy went to STAR and did exceptional well. He did not get frustrated or irritated when I made multiple stops on the way to STAR and on the way home.

Had ribs for dinner which he enjoys very much. Then he sat in his room and did 4 math problems with much resistence. I have to hover over him and he basically wants me to do the work for him so I have to continually come up with questions that make him think and solve the problem for himself without getting frustrated and just telling him what to write. His performance on his homework shows that he does not understand the material.

Earlier in the day he said “I did great on my test!” When questioned tonight he says “I bombed. I did great on the ones that I knew how to do.”

Tommy’s School Day

Thursday, April 15th, 2004

Dad reports:
This is as Tommy recalls.
Note: The regular teacher is absent again.

  • Rode bus.
  • Classroom:Went to his classroom (not a homeroom as he should) and played StarCraft with Internet chat
  • Reading: “I think I had a test but I’m not sure”
  • Math: I had my test (note: we sent a note explaining that he should not take the test since no one has taught him the material. He was also out for a week at the school’s request. His communication log, which had the note, is not in his bag and I suspect the teacher’s aid never looked at it.)
  • Lunch: He ate outside with 2 other classmates while others remained inside
  • Gym: “I walked around the parking lot.” He says “Some students were trying to break lights. Some students played something doing with golf. Some students were sleeping in the grass. Some were walking around the parking lot. Some were with the coach playing softball.” (What a great environment for Tommy!)
  • Science: Made a study notebook for Chapter 25 (this tells me he is soon to have a test on the material that he refuses to finish)
  • Classroom: Alone for at least 15 minutes playing StarCraft with Internet chat

I contend this school wants him to repeat the 8th grade and is no longer trying to teach him.

Dad reports this morning:
Gave him medicine at 6:12 and prompted him to get dressed and begin his homework. Homework never got touched.

Tommy seemed in a decent mood.

Dad reports last night:
Tommy was forcing himself to stay awake. I could never figure out his ulterior motive.
