All are welcome. Typically the attendees are the caregivers of Aspergers diagnosed family but we have had adult aspies, friend’s of aspies and professionals attend. Discussion ranges from venting to difficulties with schooling to support systems to news to theraputic techniques to social opportunities and more.

And he’s off!

Dad reports:
Tommy is off to stay with bio-dad until the 21st. He was like a soda can shaken up. He was non-stop talking and trying to figure out ways to pack in as much interaction before he left. “Look at this. Look at that.” Tommy was nervous as all get out.

It will take some time for all the details of the weekend to surface. Tommy and his sister argued much of the weekend. Bio-dad yelled at Tommy. Tommy showered for an hour at the hotel without using soap or shampoo. Bio-dad took the kids to a pawn shop and let Tommy buy a Gerber multi-tool complete with two sharp blades. Apparently Tommy went right to whittling one of his sister’s cheese puffs. I immediately confiscated the knife. Tommy does not have the good sense to use a knife without supervision.

These next 9 days will be rather interesting.

Web Site Helps Consumers Shop for Drugs

Saturday, December 11th, 2004

Dad reports:

Consumer Reports compares prices, effectiveness for free

Buyers have long gone to Consumer Reports to choose their sedans, toaster ovens, and stereos, but now they can turn to it for their drugs as well.

The magazine on Thursday launched an educational and outreach initiative called Best Buy Drugs, which includes a free Web site and will compare medications in terms of price, effectiveness, and safety. One drug in each of several categories will earn a “Best Buy” distinction.

“the cost of drugs is becoming a national crisis.”

The initiative takes its drug effectiveness information from the Drug Effectiveness Review Project (DERP)…

The Best Buy project is kicking off with three drug categories — cholesterol-lowering statins, proton pump inhibitors for heartburn and acid reflux, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for arthritis and pain — and will be adding more each month until it has 20 categories.

Dad reports:
The latest phone call revealed that they were having a problem getting Tommy to stop “clucking.” The clucking is his latest tick. It is a noise he makes with his tongue and he has learned to be very loud. It gets immediate attention (albeit negative) so it is particularly satisfying to Tommy.

Tommy was excited about “midnight bowling” but on the phone corrected himself and said “we aren’t doing that.” He seems to be enjoying himself.

Dad reports this morning:
Last night Tommy was about to bust out of his skin waiting for bio-dad to arrive. He would call him over and over again to find out just where he was. I thought he was going to have a total meltdown before bio-dad arrived. Bio-dad arrives and the 3 kids rush out the door. We forget to brief bio-dad on the medicine schedule but figure the kids will cover it. At 9:30pm Tommy still had not had his medicine and his sister was getting “tired of telling him to ‘quit it’”

This morning the kids called and seemed happy to be playing with their toys.

Dad reports this morning:
Tommy wore his mother out yesterday while I was at the office. We are trying hard to keep things nice. He is trying hard to let us have his worst before he goes off to Boston this weekend. Bio-dad arrives today.

Tommy was self directed last night. I have no idea how late he stayed up. I only intervened in the kitchen once. Now he sleeps in.

I saw this on one of the Google Ads. Perhaps we need to try The Asperger Coach.

Stupid Parents

Thursday, December 9th, 2004

Dad reports:
Mom and I had a talk with Tommy yesterday and asked him to say what was on his mind. He said, “I don’t want to be yelled at or slapped.” We said no guarantees but we’d try.

Tommy then spouted out, “No offense but I think you two are stupid. You’re idiots.”
Our reply, “We know. You’ve been telling that to {bio-dad} for 2 years.”

Besides, don’t all teenagers think their parents are stupid.

Dad reports this morning:
The doctors concur that school at this point is a waste of effort particularly if every day Tommy is going to come home early. Tommy will return to school in January. This morning I am letting him sleep in.

Short Day
